Herbalism is a very popular skill because it gives the player the ability to build a lot of profit in a relatively short amount of time.
It is an important requirement for alchemy, which allows character or classes to create various potions such as healing and invisibility potions. Other potions that can be produced are Mana, elemental resistance and so forth.
Herbs can also be sold at the auction house. Certain herbs can be worth more than Gold at various stages in the game.
The profession itself is a racial skill. Although all races can develop this skill from scratch, Taurens start with an advantage of 15 levels. This means that a Tauren starts at level 16 instead of level 1.
Herbs are located with a functionality called "Find Herb". When activating this function, herbal locations will be highlighted by a yellow dot on the mini map as soon as player gets close.
The following list of skill levels gives the player a good idea of where to pick herbs. It is important to pick at least 50% of the current crop before moving on.
Leave gray herbs alone unless you really want them. They will not let you increase your skill level.
Skill levels
1-100: Durotar Area:
The simplest level with the highest concentration of herbs. No difficulty in harvesting herbs.
100-150 : The Barrens area:
Not as concentrated as the previous level. Herbs tend to be clumped together in 2's or 3's with larger gaps between them
150-200: Alterac Mountains and Arathi Highlands:
Both these areas are good for harvesting although Arathi highland has more spawn points.
200-240: Tanaris:
Herbal concentrations are sparser in this level.
240 - 280: Feralas and Swamp of Sorrows:
Feralas has good concentration of Sungrass While Swamp of Sorrows, an abundance of Blindweed. Rather choose one of these areas to concentrate of harvesting. Hebal values are not as high at the auction house.
280 - 300: Eastern Plaguelands:
This area has a moderate amount of Plague bloom.
